    Rescued Clay
Martinware Inspired Workshop @W3 Gallery 25 March 2024

Context: As part of the Martinware Centenary celebration during 2024, a workshop is proposed to take place during the W3 Gallery ceramics exhibition for twelve participants.

Workshop Outline: This workshop welcomes participants of all skill levels and offers a practical opportunity to craft a piece inspired by the unique style of Martinware, utilising 'rescued clay'. This material is sustainably sourced from construction sites, re-purposing what would otherwise be discarded as waste. Alongside the hands-on clay modelling session, attendees will receive a concise, 15-minute overview of the Martin brothers and their influential artistry. Please note that the creations made during the workshop will not undergo firing, but participants are encouraged to take their pieces home as a keepsake of their experience.

Date & Location: Mon 25 March from 2-4 PM (2 hours) at W3 Gallery 185 High St, London W3 9DJ.

Participants: Maximum 12 participants. No previous pottery experience is needed.

The workshop will be run by Rescued Clay volunteers Victor Pedrosa and Prashant Patel.

Victor Pedrosa blends the worlds of art and science as a ceramicist and neuroscientist. His journey into pottery began unexpectedly during a therapy session, where a simple lump of clay served as a transformative tool for expression. This pivotal moment ignited over ten years of passion and expertise in ceramics. Victor continues to embrace clay's therapeutic qualities, dedicating himself to mastering the craft. His mission is to share this powerful form of self-expression and healing with a broader audience, inviting others to explore the restorative power of pottery.

Prashant Patel is an Architect & ceramicist. Initially through his architecture and interior work, he was always keen to engage with makers from the ‘globe’, who work with different materials, from natural to industrial. This allowed them to work on showcase pieces whilst pushing on the research testing of materials. Since 4 years ago, he has trained as a ceramist at the ‘Arts et Techniques Ceramiques’ school in Paris and now carries on with the will of exploring ceramic as a material and as a culture through its makers.

    What Will Be Needed

We will bring 1 kg of clay per participant, equipment (e.g. water bowls) and pottery tools to use at the workshop.

We would advise that the participants come in comfortable clothing, with an apron and a small towel in order to be ready for a fully expressive workshop.

Participants may also wish to bring some hand cream as clay is drying to the skin.
